Tree removal in Blauvelt: what is different here
Blauvelt sits in the middle of Orangetown, between Orangeburg, Pearl River, West Nyack and the wooded ridge of Clausland Mountain and Blauvelt State Park to the east. The flatter western side along Route 303 and Western Highway is 1950s to 1970s capes, ranches and splits; the eastern side climbs toward the ridge with larger, newer houses on wooded and sloping lots.
That split shows up in tree quotes. Flat-lot jobs are usually quick bucket-truck removals. On the ridge side, tall oaks, tulip poplars and hickories stand on slopes above houses and driveways, with rock close to the surface and shallow roots, and the work involves more climbing, rigging and carrying wood uphill. Lots that back onto the parkland also see more storm damage from trees leaning out of the woods.
Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Blauvelt?
Private yard trees: Blauvelt is a hamlet of the Town of Orangetown, and the Orangetown code has no general permit requirement for removing a tree on a developed residential lot. Orangetown's tree rules are tied to building and land-use applications: in the Town's two designated Critical Environmental Areas (Upper Grandview and Environs, and the South Nyack Mountainous Area, both on the Hudson side near Nyack) every tree 8 inches or more in diameter at 54 inches up must stay on a site with a permit application unless the Building Inspector marks it as essential to remove, and site plans and subdivisions must show existing trees and clearing limits. Clearing a lot ahead of a Planning Board application is treated as a violation.
Blauvelt specifics: the steeper lots near Clausland Mountain are not part of Orangetown's two mapped Critical Environmental Areas, but steep and rocky sites still get erosion review when a building permit is involved. A plain removal at an existing home needs no Town permit.
Street trees: trees in the Town right-of-way belong to the Town, and Orangetown's Shade Tree Commission handles street tree planting. County and state roads (Route 303, Route 340, Route 9W and others) have the County or NYSDOT as owner of the trees in their right-of-way. Ask before cutting anything between the sidewalk and the curb.
Where to ask: Town of Orangetown Office of Building, Zoning, Planning, Administration and Enforcement, Town Hall, 26 Orangeburg Road, Orangeburg NY 10962, (845) 359-8410.

Common tree problems in Blauvelt
- Trees leaning out of the woods. Lots that back onto Blauvelt State Park, Clausland Mountain Park or other woodland have forest-grown trees leaning toward the light, and toward your yard.
- Shallow roots over rock. Thin soil over bedrock on the ridge side lets big trees tip in saturated ground and high winds.
- Dead ash. Emerald ash borer has killed ash across Orangetown's woods; dead ash near houses and play areas should come down promptly.
- Overgrown spruce and pine screens. Planted along Route 303 and lot lines decades ago, now tall and top-heavy.
