Tree work in Nyack
Nyack is a walkable Hudson River village of Victorian and early-1900s houses on narrow, steep lots climbing from Broadway up to Route 9W, with some of the biggest and oldest trees in the county: copper beeches, 100-year-old oaks, tulip poplars and London planes along the streets. Many removals are tight jobs between houses, over porches and retaining walls, on hills where a bucket truck cannot park.
Nyack also has the most specific tree law in Rockland. The Village regulates "significant trees" (12 inches and up), caps how often you can remove one without a Planning Board hearing, and requires replacement planting, so read the summary below before you book a crew.
Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Nyack?
Significant trees: under the Village of Nyack zoning code (Chapter 360, tree protection standards in § 360-4.4 and the tree removal permit in § 360-5.18), a significant tree is any tree 12 inches or more in diameter at breast height, on private or public land. Nobody may cut, remove, top or substantially injure one without a permit. Normal crown pruning and thinning that does not harm the tree is allowed without a permit.
One tree per three years: a property owner may remove one significant tree for any reason once every three years per tax lot with a permit from the Building Inspector and no Planning Board review, on condition that you plant one replacement tree (2.5-inch caliper, from the Village's recommended list) for every 8 inches of diameter removed, or pay into the Village Tree Replacement Fund when there is no room to plant. The permit fee is $50 per tree.
Dead, diseased or hazardous trees: the Building Inspector can permit these at any time, with no limit and no replacement requirement, if you submit an inspection report from an ISA Certified Arborist or a NYS licensed landscape architect, or the Inspector confirms the condition on site. Removing more than one healthy significant tree, or clearing for construction beyond the minimum a building permit needs, goes to the Planning Board with public notice and a hearing. Trees ordered removed by a government agency, or shown on an approved site plan, are also permitted.
Where to ask: Village of Nyack Building Department, Village Hall, 9 North Broadway, Nyack NY 10960, (845) 358-0548. Upper Nyack and South Nyack are separate villages with their own tree laws (Upper Nyack's Tree Preservation Law is Local Law 4 of 2021; South Nyack's is Chapter 302); Grand View-on-Hudson and Piermont are separate as well.

Nyack questions
How much does tree removal cost in Nyack, NY?
Nyack sits at the top of the published 2026 New York ranges: steep lots, no truck access and big old trees mean climbing, rigging and sometimes a crane on Broadway. Figure $600 to $1,200 for a mid-size tree, $1,200 to $2,200 for a big one, $2,000 to $3,500 and up for a crane job, plus the $50 Village permit and the cost of the replacement tree the Village requires for a healthy significant tree.
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Nyack?
Yes, for any tree 12 inches or more in diameter, including dead ones (dead or hazardous trees get a permit without the replacement requirement). You may remove one healthy significant tree per three years with a Building Inspector permit and replacement planting; more than that goes to the Planning Board.
What about Upper Nyack and South Nyack?
Different villages, different laws. Upper Nyack adopted its own Tree Preservation Law in 2021 and South Nyack regulates removal under Chapter 302 of its code. Tell us which village you are in and the matched company will know which permit applies.
