Tree work in Stony Point
Stony Point is the northern end of Rockland: wooded hillside lots in Tomkins Cove, Jones Point and along the Hudson, 1960s to 1990s subdivisions off Route 210 and Central Highway, and Harriman State Park and Bear Mountain on the west. The trees are big and the ground is steep; oaks, hemlocks and dead ash on slopes above houses are the typical job, and storms coming down the river take out a lot of them.
The Town's tree ordinance dates to 1969 and targets timbering and new construction, not routine removals at an existing house. The county contractor license applies to any paid tree work.
Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Stony Point?
Private yard trees: the Town of Stony Point Tree Ordinance (Chapter 198 of the Town Code, adopted 1969 and amended through 2022) applies to major timbering operations and to anyone applying for a building permit for residential, commercial or industrial work. On those jobs no building permit is issued until the plan shows every proposed tree removal, the Conservation Advisory Council checks the species and condition of the trees, and no live tree over 3 inches in diameter may be removed except where it is a hardship or a danger to the public or a neighbor, where the building, driveway or recreation area will go (plus 15 ft around the building), where cut-and-fill would kill it, or for selective thinning that encourages specimen trees. Decisions can be appealed to the Zoning Board of Appeals within 20 days; the fine for violations is up to $1,000 and/or 15 days.
For an existing home with no building permit in play, the Town code does not require a tree removal permit. Trees along a Town road are the Town's (Highway Department); Route 9W and Route 210 trees belong to the State and County. Lots near the Hudson, Cedar Pond Brook or Minisceongo Creek may fall under state wetland or coastal rules; ask the estimator if the tree is near water.

Stony Point questions
How much does tree removal cost in Stony Point, NY?
Published 2026 New York ranges: $300 to $600 for a small tree, $600 to $1,200 mid-size, $1,200 to $2,200 for a large oak or hemlock, and $2,000 to $3,500 and up for crane or no-access hillside work. Not for a routine removal at an existing home. The Town's Chapter 198 rules apply when you are timbering or applying for a building permit; then the 3-inch rule and the Conservation Advisory Council review apply. Street trees belong to the Town, County or State.
Are the tree companies licensed?
Rockland County requires a county home improvement contractor license and insurance for tree removal at homes. We only refer to licensed companies; ask for the number before work starts.
