Tree removal in Monsey: what is different here
Monsey is the busiest residential area in the Town of Ramapo: ranches, splits and colonials from the 1950s to the 1970s on quarter-acre lots, many of them expanded or rebuilt, with new two-family and multifamily construction filling in along Route 59, Route 306, Maple Avenue and Saddle River Road. That building boom shapes tree work here. Big oaks and maples that were set back in the middle of a lot now stand a few feet from a new addition, a widened driveway or a neighbor's foundation, and many removals are done in tight side yards where a crew has to rope every limb down instead of dropping the tree.
Older Monsey streets also have mature street-side trees under Orange & Rockland service lines, and the area's flat, clay-heavy soil holds water after heavy rain, which is when shallow-rooted trees tip. Expect most Monsey quotes to involve climbing and rigging rather than a simple fell, and expect the crew to ask where the chipper truck can park, since many blocks have little street parking.
Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Monsey?
First, find out which government your lot is in. "Monsey" is a mailing address and a hamlet, not one municipality. Much of it is unincorporated Town of Ramapo, but a Monsey (10952) address can also sit in an incorporated village such as Kaser, Airmont, Chestnut Ridge or Wesley Hills, and each village writes its own tree rule. Your property tax bill shows whether you pay village taxes.
Private yard trees in unincorporated Ramapo: the Town of Ramapo code has no permit requirement for removing a tree on your own residential lot in the unincorporated hamlets. Ramapo's tree chapter (Chapter 258, the Shade Tree Ordinance) covers trees in public places and the five-foot shade tree easements developers must give along new subdivision streets; tree removal on land being developed is handled through the Planning Board's subdivision and site plan approvals. We read the Town code's full table of contents and found no stand-alone tree removal or clearing permit for an existing home.
For the company you hire: anyone doing landscape work for hire in unincorporated Ramapo needs the Town's Landscaping Permit ($40 per vehicle per year, March to February, with proof of vehicle registration and insurance), and every business paid to remove trees at a home anywhere in Rockland needs a Rockland County home improvement contractor license.
If your lot is in a village: Airmont requires a permit only for property that is not an owner-occupied one- or two-family home; Wesley Hills requires a clearing permit only for vacant lots, large lots and building sites; Chestnut Ridge regulates land disturbance rather than individual trees. See our Rockland tree permit table for each village's rule and source.

Common tree problems in Monsey
- Trees crowded by new construction. Roots cut for a foundation, driveway or sewer lateral within a few feet of the trunk often kill an oak slowly over two to five years. A tree that leafs out thin and drops dead limbs after nearby digging is worth an assessment before it fails toward the new building.
- Dead ash. Emerald ash borer has killed most unprotected ash trees across the lower Hudson Valley. Dead ash gets brittle fast and is dangerous to climb, so these removals often need a lift or a crane and cost more the longer they wait.
- Norway maples and silver maples. Common along older Monsey streets; both form weak forks and heavy limbs that split in wet snow. Norway maple is also a DEC-listed invasive.
- Limbs on service lines. Branches rubbing the wire from the pole to your house are a common call. O&R handles its main lines; ask O&R before anyone cuts near the service drop.

Your price depends on the tree, access and your town. Full breakdown: Rockland tree removal cost guide.
On Monsey's tight lots most jobs land in the middle to upper part of these ranges because the crew has to rig limbs down between houses. A crane is rarely needed for one mid-size tree but common for a large oak leaning over a roof with no side access.

Monsey questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Monsey, NY?
In unincorporated Ramapo, no: the Town code has no tree removal permit for an existing home. If your Monsey address is inside a village, that village's rule applies instead (Airmont, Wesley Hills and Chestnut Ridge each have their own). Check your tax bill for village taxes, and when in doubt call the Town of Ramapo Building Department at (845) 357-5100.
How much does tree removal cost in Monsey?
Published 2026 New York ranges are about $300 to $600 for a small tree, $600 to $1,200 for a medium tree, $1,200 to $2,200 for a large one and $2,000 to $3,500 or more for a crane removal over a house, plus $100 to $400 per stump. Tight side yards in Monsey usually push jobs toward the middle or top of each range.
Does the tree company need a license to work in Monsey?
Yes. Rockland County requires a home improvement contractor license for any business paid to remove trees at a home, and companies doing landscape work for hire in unincorporated Ramapo also need the Town's landscaping permit for each vehicle. Ask for the county license number and a certificate of insurance.
My neighbor's tree hangs over my house. Can I cut it?
Under New York common law you can generally trim branches that overhang your property, at your own cost, up to the property line, as long as you do not kill or seriously damage the tree. Removing the tree itself is the owner's decision. If it is dead and threatening your house, put your concern to the owner in writing.
